In the Cretaceous seas some of the apical predators were not dinosaurs but mosasaurids, large marine reptiles members of the squamate group, such as snakes and lizards.

The first known mosasaur fossils were found in the Netherlands in the 18th century and in reconstructing its appearance an element that has long questioned scholars was the true shape of the tail: only since 2013, thanks to a study published in Nature communication, we know that in the terminal part it was bilobed, with the caudal vertebrae folded down and over a "fin" of soft tissue.

The species represented in the model is Mosasaurus hoffmanni, considered the largest of the genus Mosasaurus, which could reach 15 meters in length. The reference skeletal diagram is the one made with the advice of Johan Lindgren and Mike Everhart by PWNZ3R-Dragon in 2017.

The color chosen for the model is not random, in fact, in 2014, a study analyzed with an electron microscope and a mass spectrometer flaps of fossilized skin of 3 Mesozoic marine reptiles of as many different groups, including a mosasaur: in all three samples retained traces of melanosomes, or the corpuscles that carry melanin, the dark pigment of the skin, to life. Such clues have led to the hypothesis that the backs of these animals must have been rather dark to help absorb heat, allowing these animals to move even in colder seas.

A further element that has been taken into account in the coloring of the animal is the countershading. In fact, like many marine predators, mosasaurs were darker on the back and lighter on the belly to camouflage themselves in the water.

In the color chosen for the model there are also signs of scratches left by other mosasaurs, it is in fact assumed that they had a lifestyle that is not very tolerant towards their own kind.
